John H. Shin, MD is an attending neurosurgeon and Chief of Spine Surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He is an Associate Professor of Neurosurgery at the Harvard Medical School and the inaugural Kingdon-Saylor Family Endowed Chair in Spine Neurosurgery. He is the Director of Spine Oncology and Spinal Deformity Surgery and Co-Director of the Mass General Brigham Neurosurgery Complex Spine Fellowship.
Dr. Shin specializes in complex spinal reconstruction surgery and is an internationally recognized leader in spine surgery, with focused expertise in spine oncology and deformity. He has particular interest in surgery for chordoma, metastatic tumors, and cervical spine deformities. Dr. Shin leads clinical and research programs in spine surgery, introducing novel surgical techniques, fostering multi-disciplinary collaborations, and developing regional spine surgery programs at network affiliates. In addition to clinical practice, Dr. Shin oversees a diverse portfolio of research in data science, artificial intelligence, biomechanical engineering, clinical trials, and spine outcomes research with more than 100 scientific publications to date.
Dr. Shin has been recognized by the Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital for mentoring and clinical excellence. His mentored neurosurgical trainees have pursued post-graduate spine fellowship training at the Cleveland Clinic, Barrow Neurological Institute, and the MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Dr. Shin serves on the editorial boards of the academic journals: Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine, Neurosurgery, Neurospine, and Spine. He is frequently invited to teach and train spine surgeons around the world and has directed spine courses for professional societies including the North American Spine Society, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, AO Spine, American Association of Neurological Surgeons, and the AANS/CNS Spine Section. He currently serves on the Executive and Scientific Planning Committees of the AANS/CNS Spine Section and is Chair of the Media Committee.
