NEW 2013 Guidelines for the Management of Acute Cervical Spine and Spinal Cord Injuries

Chaim's Topic of the Week

Dr. Chaim Colen provides Spine & Peripheral Nerve Topics every week. This novel review will cover anatomy, biology, neurology, neurosurgery, radiology, critical care and pathology of the spine and peripheral nerves.

It comprises a Q/A review on High-Yield Topics!

Hypothermia and Human Spinal Cord Injury

Position Statement and Evidence Based Recommendations from the AANS/CNS Joint Sections on Disorders of the Spine and the AANS/CNS Joint Section on Trauma

There is not enough evidence available to recommend for or against the practice of either local or systemic therapeutic hypothermia as a treatment for acute spinal cord injury. Clinicians should be aware that systemic hypothermia has been associated with medical complications in the head injured population prior to considering this treatment modality.

AANS Online Case Studies

The AANS Online Case Studies available on MyAANS.org now posts 27 cases covering vascular, pediatric, tumor, spine and functional cases. The cases present an interactive educational experience driven by contributions from neurosurgeons, and are free to AANS members.

The AANS Online Case Study project is designed to serve as a repository for neurosurgical cases that are not limited to viewing an article or abstract. The repository offers a comment function that allows members to interact with each other in a secure and confidential environment. Because viewers' comments are posted almost immediately, colleagues across the country have the option of gathering online to review a case and "discuss" it, or viewing and adding to cumulative commentary over time.

Guidelines for the Performance of Fusion Procedure for Degenerative Disease of the Lumbar Spine

This guideline is the first of its kind and is the culmination of 2 years of joint collaboration between neurologic and orthopedic spine surgeons. Because there has been a lack of standardization in the past for treatment of degenerative diseases of the lumbar spine, an evidence-based comprehensive set of guidelines to clarify patient care and best practice standards was necessitated. In an effort to better provide standardized and quality patient care, seventeen topics related to the lumbar spine and preoperative diagnostic and treatment options were analyzed and recommendations were developed with rationale and scientific foundation for each topic.

Outcomes Research and Spine Surgery

An article which advocates the importance of measuring patient outcomes and quality of life measurements (and making them publicly available), so that this information can serve as a basis for involving patient perspectives for both making medical decisions and in judging the results of treatment in spinal surgery.
